From
Halifax Airport
From Halifax Airport, leave
the airport and take the exit that says “
Truro or Cape Breton” - don’t take the exit
to Halifax. From Halifax take Hwy 102 and
follow the signs for the airport. From New
Brunswick just follow the signs to Cape
Breton or Truro.
Go past the towns of Truro,
Pictou and New Glasgow and follow the
directions to Antigonish. In Antigonish you
will go through three sets of traffic
lights. (Yes, the only lights on 4000 miles
of the Trans Canada Highway are right here –
we’re ‘privileged’! Actually, it’s a long
story of contorted local politics!.) After
the second set of lights you will see the
university campus on your left.
From the University continue
along the TransCanada Highway towards Cape
Breton for about 8kms. You’ll soon see a
sign for the South Side Harbour Road and a
small bridge with a flashing yellow light
(if you see a restaurant called Mother Webs
on your right you’ve gone too far by about
200 meters/yards.) Turn left at the flashing
light (right after the bridge) onto the
South Side Harbour Road. Be careful because
it’s a dangerous left turn onto oncoming
traffic. From the turnoff onto the South
Side Harbour Road the driveway to Dar ix-Xemx
is exactly 8kms (5 miles) away. Drive down
the South Side Harbour Road – at eight
kilometres you’ll see a few houses and a
green sign for a driveway on your left. The
sign will read Aveline Avenue (it’s actually
just a gravel driveway). My name Galea is on
one of the 2 or 3 mailboxes (depending on
the winter storms).
For the
Bishop’s Cottage
Just drive past the Aveline
Avenue sign and turn left onto the first
driveway - look for the 1661 Civic Number.
For the
Carriage House
Turn left onto Aveline
Avenue and drive half way down. Park in the
gravel parking spot on your left. The
boardwalk (built by some lovely former
guests!) leads straight to the cottage. (If
you’d like a building project while you’re
here just let me know!)
For Dar
ix-Xemx
Turn left onto Aveline
Avenue and go all the way down the curvy
driveway. The entrance to Dar ix-Xemx veers
off from the left just before it starts
getting really steep (about 250
meters/yards) down. You can’t miss it. But
if you do you’ll know, for you’ll end up in
the water! J In winter, if the driveway is
icy you should park at the parking spot just
before you get to the house. At all other
time just pull into the circular driveway in
front of the house.
For the Quarterdeck
Turn left onto Aveline
Avenue and go all the way down the curvy
driveway. Winding past Dar ix-Xemx untli you reach the water.
For
Seabright Cottage
From Halifax Airport, leave
the airport and take the exit that says “
Truro or Cape Breton” - don’t take the exit
to Halifax. From Halifax take Hwy 102 and
follow the signs for the airport. From New
Brunswick just follow the signs to Cape
Breton or Truro.
Go past the towns of Truro,
Pictou and New Glasgow and follow the
directions to Antigonish. In Antigonish you
go through three sets of traffic lights.
After the second set of lights you will see
the university campus on your left. Continue
past the lights to a third set of lights. It
is here that you turn left onto Church St –
you will see our local mall on the right.
This might be a good time to stock up on
groceries and liquor (both available at the
combined Sobey’s/Liquor Store at the mall.)
Continue down Church St
until you get to a T intersection – you’re
now at our Main St. Turn right and follow
Main St until the it curves past the train
tracks and up a hill (hospital on left).
Continue along this road (Hwy 237) for about
8 kilometres (5 miles) until you see a sign
for Seabright. Slow downs and veer off to
your right – you’re now on a gravel road.
Continue along this road for about 2kms (1.5
miles) – then turn right up the driveway to
the property. The civic number for the
driveway is “400” – go up the steep driveway
and abandon the car anywhere by the house.
Don’t forget to leave the keys in the
ignition so you won’t lose them! The house
should be open for you.
Please note that if you’re
lost you need to ask for the “Wunn’s”
cottage (not Chris’ cottage!) – the owners
are a US/German family from New Jersey.
The phone number at the
cottage is 902 863-0574. Local calls are
free – long distance calls can be charged to
a calling card or to one of the cards that
can be purchased at most convenience stores. |
